# Why We Work the Way We Do

## Why We Work The Way We Do

Value Stream Nonprofit Solutions is built on more than 20 years of experience working with mission-driven organizations. That experience comes from the work of Value Stream Consulting, where we have spent decades helping nonprofits and grantmaking organizations design and improve the systems that support their work.

What we do today is grounded in what we have learned — about what works, what does not, and what actually helps organizations improve over time.

### It Started with Nonprofits

The firm began by working directly with nonprofit organizations — helping them manage fundraising systems, donor relationships, and operational workflows.

That work grounded us in the realities of nonprofit operations: the pressure of grant reporting, the complexity of managing individual and institutional donors in the same system, the challenge of turning program outcomes into compelling funder communications. We saw firsthand how much effort organizations were investing in their work — and how often their systems made that work harder than it needed to be.

#### Systems Were too Complex

Tools that were implemented to solve problems often became problems themselves — difficult to maintain and increasingly disconnected from real workflows.

#### Reporting Was Disconnected

The same data was being recreated manually for every grant report, donor communication, and board update. Nothing was connected.

#### Learning Was Missing

Data was being collected and reports were being produced, but the insight needed to improve programs and strengthen fundraising rarely made it back into decisions.

## Seeing the Other Side of Philanthropy

Over time, our work expanded to include grantmaking organizations — foundations that fund the nonprofits we had been working with.

This gave us a perspective that few nonprofit consultants have: we were now seeing both how nonprofits operate and how foundations evaluate impact. We understood what funders were looking for, how they used data to make decisions, and where the communication between nonprofits and their funders was breaking down.

That perspective now informs everything we do for nonprofit clients. Our colleagues in Foundation Impact Solutions continue this work with foundations, and the two teams collaborate where the value stream connects.

## The Gap Between Data and Learning

Nonprofits were doing meaningful work. Foundations were trying to learn from that work. But the systems connecting them were not designed to support learning.

Data was moving — through reports, dashboards, and grant submissions — but insight was not. Foundations were receiving information without the context to act on it. Nonprofits were producing reports without understanding how they were being used.

Information was flowing, but value was being lost at every step. That gap became impossible to ignore.

## A Different Way to Think About This

#### Connecting Measurement, Evaluation, Research, and Learning

The MERL Value Stream emerged from this experience. It describes how value flows between nonprofits and funders — not just as financial capital, but as data, outcomes, learning, and human experience.

MERL stands for Measurement, Evaluation, Research, and Learning. Most systems are designed to support the first two. Learning is often where the system ends — or where it should begin.

The MERL Value Stream connects programs, outcomes, evaluation, and learning into a continuous loop. When it works, organizations get better over time. When it breaks down, data accumulates without producing insight and systems grow in complexity without producing value.

#### Systems Should Support Work

Technology should reduce friction, not create it. If a system demands more effort than it returns, it is the wrong system.

Data that does not produce learning does not produce improvement. The goal is insight, not documentation.

The right platform is the one that fits your capacity, your workflows, and your goals — not the one a vendor recommends.

#### Technology Should Support People

Philanthropy is human work. Systems should strengthen relationships and free people to focus on what requires human judgment.

## Why This Matters Now

Nonprofits are under more pressure than ever — from platform transitions, increasing funder expectations, and the rapid introduction of AI tools that are changing how data is captured and used.

The need for systems designed around learning, fundraising, and human impact has never been greater. The experience we have built over more than two decades is directly relevant to the decisions nonprofit leaders are making right now.
